Building Bridges, Amplifying Voices: Reflections from the Bayard Rustin Society Fireside Chat

Hosting this fireside chat was an incredible opportunity to connect generations of leaders around the themes of mentorship, belonging, and authenticity. As a member of the 2025 National Youth Advocacy Program, I began by sharing my project, "Rights in Real Time," which highlights the gaps in youth knowledge and amplifies the voices often left out of mainstream conversations. My goal was to create a space where dialogue could bridge experience and youth perspective, which was grounded in shared values of inclusion and empathy.

It was an honor to welcome Jennifer Ingram, Co-Chair of the Bayard Rustin Society’s Bay Area Chapter, an accomplished executive, author, and artist whose work embodies leadership and courage. Our conversation explored what mentorship means in practice, how belonging evolves in divided times, and how language itself can both unite and divide us. Jennifer reminded us that even when the words we use become politicized, our commitment to empathy and authenticity must remain constant. She also emphasized that true leadership is not about waiting for the right conditions, but modeling inclusion through our daily actions and choices.

As the conversation unfolded, I was struck by how relevant these lessons are for my generation. In a time when programs that promote open dialogue are being challenged, we must continue to show up, listen, and lead with courage. Conversations like this remind us that inclusion isn’t a passing trend—it’s a commitment to creating spaces where every voice is valued and respected. When we come together across experiences, we not only strengthen our communities but also build the future we want to see.
